One of the difficulties of reading is that it's a number of different skills all intertwined. If a student isn't practised in any one of these skills comprehension can break down and they'll not understand or give up completely.
Considering the impact of context on a novel, play or poem is something students find difficult. This is a lesson I planned for year 11 after an exam paper in which many didn't link to the context effectively.

Students not using paragraphs can be one of the most frustrating things. There's nothing worse than opening an exam paper to see the student has written five pages without a single break. I've been using this worksheet to get students to paragraph for years.
